Rule of Law

Strengthening the rule of law is a central component of peacebuilding practice in conflict-affected societies. With our partner civil society organisations and state institutions, PTRO makes an important contribution to strengthening the rule of law in Afghanistan. Our rule of law programme, including both research and training, helps improve access to justice through support to traditional mechanisms of dispute resolution such as local jirgas or shuras and building interlinkages and partnerships between formal and informal justice delivery systems. Our work is mainly focused on legal education, rule of law training, and legal reform, including examining the legal and political effects of the growing interconnections between formal and informal justice delivery mechanisms.
